The School of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (SLASS) at the African University of Communications and Business (AUCB) serves as the academic foundation for all undergraduate students, providing essential general education courses that enhance critical thinking, communication, and analytical skills. Regardless of their field of study, all students at AUCB must complete a set of required courses offered by SLASS to ensure they acquire a well-rounded education.

SLASS is home to two academic departments:

Department of Language Arts (DLA)

The Department of Language Arts (DLA) supports students across all schools and departments by offering essential courses aimed at strengthening writing, speaking, and analytical abilities. These courses are crucial for academic success and professional communication.

Required Courses Offered:

  • Academic Writing – Equips students with essential writing and research skills for academic and professional purposes.
  • Public Speaking and Debate – Develops students’ oral communication, persuasion, and argumentation skills.
  • Critical Thinking – Enhances students’ ability to analyze information, solve problems, and make logical decisions.
  • Functional French – Provides students with basic proficiency in French for communication in diverse professional settings.
  • Literature and Composition – Introduces students to literary analysis and advanced writing techniques.

Department of Social Sciences (DSS)

The Department of Social Sciences (DSS) provides foundational courses in humanities, social sciences, and technology, fostering a broad understanding of human society, scientific advancements, and technological applications.

Required Courses Offered:

  • Africana Studies – Explores African history, culture, and contributions to global civilization.
  • Computer Fundamentals – Introduces students to essential computing skills for academic and professional use.
  • Introduction to Psychology – Examines human behavior and mental processes to improve interpersonal understanding.
  • College Mathematics – Develops quantitative reasoning and problem-solving skills.
  • Science & Technology in Our Lives – Investigates the impact of scientific and technological developments on society.
  • Introduction to Sociology – Provides an overview of social structures, institutions, and human interactions.

Importance of SLASS Courses

  • Mandatory for Graduation: Students must successfully complete all required courses to be eligible for graduation.
  • Foundation for Success: These courses strengthen critical thinking, research, and communication skills that are valuable across all disciplines.
  • GPA Impact: A minimum grade of D is required to pass any general education course. Failing a required course will impact the student’s Grade Point Average (GPA).
